Changing your DNS Number

DNS numbers are used to find sites on the Internet. Without them, you would be able to connect, but be unable to go anywhere on the Internet.

WINDOWS 95/98

To change the DNS numbers in Windows 95, follow these steps:

  1. Double click My Computer on your desktop.
  2. Double click Dial-Up Networking.
  3. Highlight the Powerlink icon by clicking on it once.
  4. Go to File - Properties. You should see a screen come up with two buttons at the bottom marked Configure and Server Type. Click on Server Type
  5. Click on the buttom marked TCP/IP Settings
  6. Currently, you will have two sets of numbers entered in the middle section. They should be 204.174.16.4 and 204.174.18.2
  7. Change the option to server assigned DNS:
  8. Click on OK to close each screen, until you have exited the property settings for Powerlink.
  9. You are now set up with the new DNS numbers.

WINDOWS 3.1

To change the DNS numbers in Windows 3.1, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Internet group in Program Manager.
  2. Double click your Trumpet dialer as if you were about to dial into the Internet
  3. After the program has loaded, press the ESC key on your keyboard to stop the dialing process.
  4. Go to your menu at the top and select File - Setup.
  5. Find the line marked Name Servers that contains the number 207.102.129.1
  6. Delete that number and enter in: 204.174.16.4 204.174.18.2
  7. You should have a space seperating the two sets of numbers
  8. Click on OK down below
  9. You will need to restart Trumpet for the changes to take effect.
  10. Exit Trumpet and dial-in. If you are able to connect and can't surf the Internet, repeat the steps listed above to make sure you have entered the information correctly.

MACINTOSH

To change the DNS numbers in your Macintosh, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Control Panel
  2. Launch your MacTCP
  3. The Domain Name Server information currently in the lower right hand corner will need to be changed.
  4. Currently, you should have wkpowerlink.com as the Domain. 207.102.129.1 and 207.102.129.2 should be listed on seperate lines.
  5. In the first line, enter in 204.174.16.4 for the IP Address next to the Domain.
  6. In the second line, enter in 204.174.18.2 for the IP Address next to the Domain.
  7. Click on OK.
  8. Close MacTCP. You may need to restart your Macintosh for the settings to take effect, depending on which OS version you are running.
  9. Try to dial into the Internet and surf the web. If you are unable to go anywhere, please check the above steps to make sure you have entered the information correctly.
