Dial-Up Networking Properties for Win 95

: Start | Programs | Accessories | Dial-Up Networking | Your Connection Icon

  • Highlight Your Connection Icon.
  • Select File in the Menu Bar and then select Properties.
There are two settings that you need to examine General Dial-Up Networking Properties, and these are:
  1. Configure | General - Connection - Options
  2. Server Types | TCP/IP Settings
If the settings you see below are not what you have, go here.


Dial-Up Networking - General
    As shown below [Figure 1.0] -
  • Uncheck Use country and area code.
  • Type your local Internet connection number.
  • Once you uncheck Use country and area code, this will grey out the Area code and Country code. This will prevent you from dialling out as a long distance call.
  • Click Configure button to check your modem properties and to continue.
  • Click Server Type button to check your TCP/IP Settings and to continue.

General - Configure - General
  • Change Maximum speed to as highest as possible. Ideally, 38400 for 14.4 kbps, 57600 for 28.8 kbps, and 115200 for 33.6 kbps and higher. If your machine can handle it and if it work, select 115200 for Maximum speed.
  • For your information, leave Only connect at this speed checkbox blank.
  • Click Connection folder tab to continue to Figure 1.1.2.0.

  • As shown in Figure 1.1.2.0 below, you should have Data bits : 8, Parity : None, and Stop bits : 1.
  • Place a check mark in Wait for dial tone before dialing checkbox.
  • Click Port Settings button to check your Port Settings and to continue to Figure 1.1.2.1 or click Advanced button to check your Advance Connection Settings and to continue to Figure 1.1.2.2.

  • Follow the screen you see below - Figure 1.1.2.1.

  • As shown below [Figure 1.1.2.2], a properly setup modem with the proper driver would have Use error control and Use flow control available for modification.
  • Under normal setting, what you see below is what you should have.
  • Click OK button to go back to modem properties. In this case, to continue to Figure 1.3 - Options.

General - Configure - Options
  • As shown below [Figure 1.1.3.0], you may place a check mark in Bring up terminal window after dialing. Just as it says, it will bring up a Terminal screen. The Terminal screen, which is a black humongous box, will allow to verify if you have a clean connection. In the Terminal screen, if you can read the words in English without any symbols, you know you have a clean connection. Click the Continue button if you have a clean connection; otherwise, click Cancel button to abort and to do the steps again.
  • In Status Control section, place a check mark in Display modem status checkbox. This will place an icon in Notification box in the Task Bar to verify your connection. You will find the Notification box where the time is displayed on your computer screen. Unless you moved it, it should be located on the bottom right corner of your monitor screen. In which ever way, it will be in one of the corners.
  • Click the button to go back to the Your Connection settings - Figure 1. In this case, proceed to Server Type.

Server Type
  • As shown in Figure 1.2 below, select Server Types folder tab.
  • For Type of Dial-Up Server, you should PPP.
  • In Advanced option section, select Enable software compression and you may also select Log on to Network. If you are using Windows 98, do not select Log on to Network.
  • In Allowed Network protocols section, select TCP/IP only.
  • Click TCP/IP settings button to continue to Figure 1.2.1.

TCP/IP Settings
  • As shown in Figure 1.2.1 below, follow the setup closely.
  • Select Server assigned IP address in the first section.
  • Select Specify name server addresses in the second section. Type in your ISP's Primary and Secondary DNS numbers.
  • Leave Primary and Secondary WINS settings alone unless your ISP provided the numbers.
  • Make sure Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network are checked.
  • Click OK button to finish, and click all other OK buttons all the way back to Dial-Up Networking dialog box. Close Dial-Up Networking dialog box.
