Quick Fixes to your Connection Problems

Sometimes your net connection doesn't seem to be working all that well. Other times, you need to do a few tweaks to make sure you're connecting at your best possible speed. Here's a few tricks, tips and things to download to make your net connection smooth. Please note, all of these tips are written for Windows 95 in mind (sorry Mac users - we hope to have info for you at a future date).

  1. Speed it up
There are a couple of things you can do to speed up your net connection. The first is to make sure your modem is working at it's highest possible speed. Double Click on the "My Computer" icon. Find the "Control Panel" icon, and double click that. Locate the "Modems" icon, and again double click. Check the display that pops up. Near the bottom, it says Maximum Speed. Set this to 115200 (highest setting) regardless of what your modem speed is. Click ok and close all the windows.

  2. Speed it up, part two
Double click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. Locate "Dial up Networking" and click on it twice. Find your Net connection icon, and right click on it, and select "Properties". Click the "Server Options" tag, and when the screen pops up, if NetBEUI and or IPX networks are selected, deselect them. Only your TCP/IP Network stack should be selected. Click ok, close all your windows. The next time you dial in, your connection time should be quicker.

  3. Get the Latest Drivers
If you're still using the original Windows 95 (in other words, you haven't bought Win95 with your computer in the last 8 months), you should download both the latest dial up software upgrade, and latest modem drivers from Microsoft's web site. Be forewarned though, this software is a bit complex to load and get running, so if you're a beginner, it's best not do attempt this, unless you can get your local computer geek to help you out. The latest Dial Up Software from Microsoft allows better connections, improved functionality and also is a lot more convenient, especially if you have more than one account.
In the future, we'll post more quick fixes and ways to improve your net connection. Check back once in a while, and also look for news about new info here on our E-zine, Surf the Web!
