News Group Difficulties
If you are having difficulties getting access to the newsgroups on news.wkpowerlink.com, there are several things to check.
- Make certain that you are dialing into a WKPowerLink server (if you have accounts with several providers) as you cannot acces the news
server otherwise.
- If the above is correct and you are online go to
START and choose RUN then type winipcfg. Make note of the IP
address that is returned and the time and city from which you
called and then email that to support@wkpowerlink.com. From there we can track down the
problem.

Finding Your IP Address
Your IP address is a unique number assigned to you everytime you're
on the Internet. There may be times when you need to find out exactly
what that number is, so here is the easiest way to do it:
- Click on the Start Menu, click on Run
- Type "winipcfg" (minus the quotation marks) in the box that pops up. Type "winip" if you're running Windows NT.
- Click OK.
The window that pops up will display your IP in the form: 255.255.255.255, where the 255's are replaced with your own IP address.
Email attachment problems
Problem: If you send a message with a MIME encoded attachment from your Microsoft Exchange email client and have configured the internet recipient to "Always send to this recipient as RTF (Rich Text Format)" and that recipient uses a POP3 client, the recipient will not receive the attachment.
Cause: The MIME-encoded attachment is still present but is not accessible by the POP3 client (depending on the POP3 client - will not work with Outlook Express). This problem only happens when sending an attachment as MIME.
Solution:
- Disable the option "Always send to his recipient as RTF" when sending an attachment to an Internet recipient using POP3 mail (most recipients)
- Do not include an attachment in an RTF message
Making Internet Explorer Dial Out
Sometimes Internet Explorer 3.0 (IE) stops using your dial up connection to the internet. This is a common problem usually caused when a General Protection Fault occurs in IE while you are online. The result is that next time you open IE it "thinks" it is still online and doesn't need to dial out. To correct this error do the following:
- Open My Computer then double click on Dial Up Networking (DUN)
- Find the Dial-up Networking Connection for your ISP
- Connect using that connectoid by double clicking on it
- Once connected open Internet Explorer
- Go to any website - if you can't surf to a website you will need to replace TCP/IP and DUN. (contact support for instructions)
- Once you have reached a website click on View->Options.
- Click on the Connection Tab.
- Make sure Connect to the Internet is checked.
- If it is continue below
- If not check it, close IE and all other programs then properly shut down and restart your computer
- Click the down arrow next to the connection name - be sure it is using the same connectoid as you used to connect up with.
- Select the same connection in the drop-down list box EVEN if it was previously selected.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
- Close IE then log off the internet. Then close all programs and properly shut down your computer before restarting it.
Getting the most from your modem
- If your Outlook Express indicates Dial-Up Networking is already is used,
change setting to Manual Connection. This will prevent connection
problems.
- Make sure all programs are closed before installing Microsoft Internet
Explorer 4. This means that, especially antivirus programs, any programs
must be disabled completely.
- Install and configure Internet Mail and MS Exchange / Windows Messaging
v4.0 before setting up MS Outlook for e-mail. Please note that MS Office
97 will install MS Exchange 5.0 over MS Exchange 4.0. Windows Messaging
is an update for Exchange 4.0. MS just renamed it to Windows Messaging
because some people confused it for a financial programs or something.
- If you are having slow dowloading problem, you may want to check if
you are using anti-virus such as, especially, McAfee WebScan, McAfee
AntiVirus, Norton AntiVirus. These antivirus will scan the program being
downloaded which really slows it down.
